In order to provide a wider service for my client's I regularly attend a variety of different workshops to learn new skills or to improve existing techniques. Many of the props I make for film and television are weapon related items and therefore it is important to have a better understanding of how to fabricate these props using traditional skills. Model making is knowing how to fabricate any item using the most practical materials and offering the best value for money. Using traditional techniques gives authenticity to a piece and helps to improve the production process by using new materials and offering client's more variety.

Technical drawing of WALSINGHAM'S bed for the feature film ELIZABETH: THE GOLDEN AGE. My project brief was to make four large architectural finials and two smaller finials of a slightly different design in addition to two relief carvings which would be in key shots during the film.

These were interesting shapes to make in such a short time scale (one week for the initial finial prototype props, moulds of the finials and the final casts which also included the relief carved bed details) so all in all, it was quite a tight deadline. The finials comprised of a pyramid shaped top which joined on to two different cylindrical fluted shapes for the bases and each design had intersecting tear shaped channels cut all the way through each of the four pyramid sides.

The final pigmented resin cast finials ready to be delivered and art worked for final set dressing.

Private commission to make a nut & bolt GEOCACHE. This is no ordinary piece of threaded steel bar, it's made from M20 (20mm diameter) marine grade stainless steel, cut and bored out to encapsulate an inner brass tube containing a pencil, log book and room for a small item.

I chose a STEAMPUNK theme for my particular artificial arm and named the mechanical 'ARM-O-MATIC' art/prop after the man who kindly donated it to the exhibition, DR LAUCHLAN THACHWELL-JAMES, from Australia.
